A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Handbook Of Petroleum Product Analysis(Chapter 3)

The Skopos theory holds that every text has its specific purpose and that text translation should serve this purpose.From the perspective of the Skopos theory,combined with the English-Chinese translation practice of the Handbook of Petroleum Product Analysis,this paper discusses and analyzes the language characteristics of petroleum information text from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,and discusses the strategies and methods of petroleum text translation.At the lexical level,this paper analyzes professional terms,verbs and prepositions,points out that translation strategies of vocabularies can be chosen based on the principle of purpose and fidelity,and puts forward methods and techniques such as literal translation and borrowing.At the syntactic level,this paper analyses the the language characteristics from three levels: sentences of passive voice,simple sentences and compound sentences,points out that translation methods can be chosen based on the principle of purpose and coherence,and puts forward techniques of omission and amplification and word order adjustment.Finally,at the textual level,this paper analyzes the language characteristics of the text,points out the guiding role of coherence principle,and puts forward translation techniques such as adding cohesive words.The Skopos theory can be effective in guiding the translation of texts about petroleum products.As for different levels of the text,solutions can be made according to various principles.The paper may provide suggestions for translators and promote the professionalism of petroleum text translation.
