| With the deepening of globalization, texts of science and technology play an increasingly prominent role in the translation market. This translation project report is based on the translation of part of petroleum geology classic textbook of the Oslo University in Norway:Petroleum Geoscience From Sedimentary Environments to Rock Physics. The translator puts the first chapter into Chinese. As a special English style and the category of English for Science and Technology(EST), petroleum English has its own characteristics in diction. The translator hopes to know the characteristics of EST, and grasp the translation principles and techniques through this translation practice. Under the guidance of the Skopos, coherence and fidelity rules, which are the quintessential parts of the Skopos theory, the translator focuses on the translation techniques of technical terms, passive voice, complicated sentences, etc, and deepens awareness of the three principles of EST translation, namely, faithfulness, smoothness and standardization. Meanwhile the translator hopes to introduce outstanding teaching resources for her alma mater, build a bridge for people who work on the oil industry to follow the latest developments in foreign petroleum geology. As a translator who does not major in petroleum engineering, the translation of petroleum engineering text is helpful to expand her technical background, making her an application-oriented translator.The report consists of four chapters. The first chapter, introduction, gives a description of the translation project, including the background, source and significance of the project. The second chapter concentrates on translation process description, covering preparation before translating, the brief introduction of content and linguistic features of the source text, the selection of translation strategies and translation tools, and the brief introduction of translation difficulties. The third chapter focuses on translation strategies and case analysis which addresses problems encountered in the translation practice on the lexical and syntactical level. Solutions to these problems are proposed by the resorting to the Skopos theory and translation techniques are used to realize an optimal version. By solving problems arising from the translation process, the report aims to produce possible translation techniques for text on petroleum English. In chapter four, the translator summarizes enlightenment and lessons gained in the process of translation and points out the unsolved problems. It is essential for a translator of English for petroleum science and technology to have good command of the two languages, to get familiar with specialized knowledge and technical terms and to be skilful at using translation principles and techniques. |
