| Recent years have witnessed a remarkable development of offshore oil resources exploration in China.Translation of English texts on offshore petroleum has been considered as a critical factor in learning foreign advanced technologies. The practice aims to enrich bilingual knowledge of offshore oil, analyze the problems encountered in the translation process as well as explore the translation methods. This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is selected from the fifth chapter of the book Handbook of Offshore Oil and Gas Operations published in Gulf Professional Press in 2015,written by James G.Speight.Drilling and completion techniques are introduced in the source text, involving a multitude of petroleum terms, polysemous words and measurement units, and noun structures, passive voice and attributive clauses are recurring elements that are informative, specialized and logically strict.Guided by Skopos Theory, this report analyzes the problems encountered in translation at lexical, syntactic and textual levels and explores the corresponding methods. At the lexical level, annotation, literal translation and contextual analysis are adopted to translate petroleum terms, polysemous words and measurement units. At the syntactic level, conversion, division and order adjustment are used for noun structures, passive sentences and attributive clauses. At the textual level, the translator uses grammatical cohesion of reference and ellipsis as well as lexical cohesion of reiteration to achieve discourse coherence. It is hoped that this report can complement the application of Skopos Theory in the translation practice of petroleum text and provide references for similar texts. |
