An E-C Translation Project On Translation Of International Telecommunication Union Magazine Under The Guidance Of Complete Translation Theory

The unexpected and unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic is striking the whole world,which technology had made a radical contribution in fighting against it.Information and communication technology(ICT)is of particular importance in this battle and is emphasized by many countries.The International Telecommunication Union(ITU)therefore released a special edition of ITU magazine titled Tech v Covid Managing the Crisis to explain the vital role ICT has been playing and revealed the yet existing maladies including the digital divide and underdevelopment in some areas.As for this particular translation practice,numerous amounts of information and the requirement for expertise demand a delicate translation to produce a target text with intact information and pragmatic values.The translator translated the ITU News magazine under the guidance of the methodology of complete translation,which is presented relatively to variation theory.The methodology comprises with four models of complete translation methodology: addition and subtraction model,transposition and substitution model,division and synthetization model,and correspondence model.Furthermore,the four models comprise with seven methods,namely,addition,subtraction,transposition,substitution,division,synthetization,and correspondence.In this particular practice,the comprehensive adoption of seven methods is essential for a better translation,especially in compound sentences.Since it is an ICT-themed text,the combination of addition & division,subtraction &synthetization,transposition & substitution is rather prioritized due to the vast difference between English and Chinese.Among the seven methods,the correspondence method is most seldom adopted,only available when translating titles or short sentences with overt structures.Through this translation practice,the translator gained a profound understanding about the methodology of complete translation as well as much experience for ICT translation.And the complete translation is manifested as an effective guide for translation practice.Hopefully,this translation report will shed lights on translation in ICT field.
