Mobile phone addiction is a behavior in which an individual’s physiological, psychological and social functions are significantly impaired by excessive use of mobile phones.Mobile phone addiction not only affects study efficiency, but also leads to physical problems such as shoulder, neck, and lumbar spine pain, vision loss, and fatigue and psychological problems such as loneliness, anxiety, depression, and irritability among college students. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of boredom proneness, sensation seeking and self-control on college students’ mobile phone addiction from the perspective of the compensatory theory of mobile phone usability, integrating the sensation seeking theory and arousal theory as well as the energy-limited theory of self-control,and used group counseling to intervene in college students’ selfcontrol in order to alleviate the mobile phone addiction of the intervened college students.Study 1 used questionnaires to collect data from 1257 college students through the Boredom Proneness Questionnaire, the Sensation Seeking Scale, the Self-Control Scale for College Students, and the Smartphone Addiction Scale for Adults to investigate the relationship between boredom proneness, sensation seeking,self-control,and mobile phone addiction and the current situation.Study 1 showed that: self-control and mobile phone addiction among college students were moderately high, and boredom proneness and sensation seeking were moderately low;all four variables were not significantly different in terms of gender;boredom proneness and sensation seeking were significantly different in terms of birthplace;except for sensation seeking, the other three variables were significantly different in terms of grade;only self-control was significantly different in terms of major; There is a significant correlation between boredom proneness, sensation seeking,self-control and mobile phone addiction among college students, and boredom proneness and sensation seeking positively predict mobile phone addiction, while self-control negatively predicts mobile phone addiction;Sensation seeking and self-control of college students played a chain mediating role between boredom proneness and mobile phone addiction.Based on the mechanism of the effect of boredom proneness on mobile phone addiction,Study 2 selected self-control as an intervention variable in order to improve the self-control ability of college students through positive thinking group counseling and thus improve mobile phone addiction.Twenty college students in Zhangzhou City,Fujian Province were used as the study subjects, and the subjects were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given a seven-week intervention in the form of group counseling, and the control group was not given any intervention. At the end of the intervention, the two groups were tested on relevant scales in order to compare the effect of positive group counseling on the improvement of college students’ mobile phone addiction.Study 2 showed that positive group counseling enhanced college students’ selfcontrol and had a better effect on improving mobile phone addiction. |
