| China has now entered a highly ageing society, and ageing in place, with the family as the core, the community as the backbone and professional services as the reliance,is currently the main mode of ageing for the elderly in China. The community space is the most important outdoor activity space in the community, and its degree of ageing has a great impact on the quality of life of the elderly in their homes. Most of the elderly in urban areas live in old communities, and it is difficult for the community space to meet the needs of the elderly in terms of safety, behavioural support and living comfort under the ageing-in-place model.Public spaces in older communities need to be adapted to meet the needs of ageing in place. As the community environment, the ageing condition and the level of care required vary from one community to another, the matching ageing retrofitting strategy cannot be based on a single standard. There is a need to develop a strategy that allows for a graded, layered and systematic approach to ageing-friendly retrofitting according to the needs of different older communities. This paper firstly explains the concept of ageing in place, and then discusses the relationship between family, community and professional services in ageing in place, and then discusses the design of ageing-friendly community spaces around the ageing in place model, defining the scope of this study. The characteristics and needs of the elderly in the home care model are then analysed. This is followed by a survey of some typical old communities in Wuhan to summarise the problems and needs of ageing-in-place retrofitting in Wuhan. The principles of ageing in the community are then organised according to the needs for safety and security, behavioural assistance and comfortable living, and the principles of graded ageing retrofit design are proposed according to three levels: basic, improved and upgraded. The results of the preliminary research were analysed by means of hierarchical analysis, and the corresponding data structure model was constructed and the indicators at each level were assigned weights. The weights of the indicators were then calculated, and four typical old communities were selected to generate corresponding retrofitting strategies from the calculation results. Finally, the design practice of ageing-appropriate design in four aspects, namely roads, public spaces,inter-residential public spaces and ageing-in-place support,is carried out around the public space of Wuhan’s Ganghua 116 community, providing a theoretical and practical basis for the ideas and design methods proposed in this paper. The purpose of this study is to provide a practical reference for the design of ageing-friendly retrofitting in communities under the ageing-in-place model in the future, and to help build a systematic and graded theoretical system for ageing-friendly retrofitting design. |
