At present,Beijing’s urban development is undergoing a transition from incremental expansion to quality improvement, gradually entering the era of existing urban resources. The issues arising from the phase of incremental development in Beijing are becoming increasingly evident.During this phase, many residential projects have pursued additional benefits by reducing the land area of community supporting facilities, thereby resulting in inadequate community life services and a weakened functional capacity of urban residential areas. In recent years, both the municipal and district governments in Beijing have placed significant emphasis on the comprehensive renovation of underground spaces. As the vacated underground spaces in Beijing Old City communities continue to increase, the effective reuse of such spaces to enhance the quality of community life and supplement community life service facilities has become a critical concern in Beijing’s urban development. This thesis focuses on the utilization of underground spaces in Beijing Old City communities as the research subject.Employing a combination of data analysis and on-site investigations,it explores the feasibility, development patterns, and current issues associated with constructing life service facilities in the underground spaces of Beijing Old City communities, and presents relevant construction suggestions. The first part of this study outlines the research objectives, significance, and methodology, while organizing the available sources of reference materials and research methods.Building upon an examination of the historical evolution of underground spaces and life service facilities in Beijing Old City communities, the second part analyzes the feasibility of utilizing the underground spaces in these communities to construct life service facilities from the perspectives of policy foundations, spatial layout, and spatial characteristics. The third part classifies the underground spaces in Beijing Old City communities into four types: comprehensive management services, convenience services, cultural and recreational services, and storage facility services. It discusses the construction status, spatial layout, and utilization of different types of facilities, aiming to grasp the construction patterns of various life service facilities in the underground spaces of the community and analyze the current utilization and issues of the underground spaces. The fourth part explores the mechanisms that influence the construction of different types of community underground life service facilities, considering spatial construction, spatial layout, and spatial functions. Finally,by integrating the current situation analysis from the third part and the influencing mechanisms from the fourth part, this study provides construction suggestions for different types of life service facilities in the underground spaces of the community.Through an analysis and summary of the current status of underground spaces in Beijing Old City communities and the utilization of these spaces for constructing life service facilities, this thesis responds to government policies on the reuse of urban existing resources and offers targeted construction suggestions as a reference for urban renewal and the utilization of underground spaces in the community of Beijing..
