The search for new and different forms in the name of ’creativity’ while ignoring the long-term use quality of products intensifies the trend of disposable consumerism.Traditional sustainable design considers the environmental benefits of products and systems in terms of technology and efficiency but does not address the human behavior that causes the waste dilemma.By shifting the perspective of design from people to the relationship between people and products and by building a solid emotional connection between the two to achieve a long product life span,Emotional Durable Design(EDD)can be a valuable attempt to deal with the current waste problem caused by uncontrolled consumption and wasteful behavior.This paper takes home planting activity as an entry point and attempts to design a creative home product(CHP)through the concept of EDD.In the first part,EDD is elaborated by tracing its origin through literature and identifying a similar concept.Then based on the analysis of EDD’s theoretical basis and design elements,the basic principles of EDD in terms of product form,use and value are summarized.The second part carries out a systematic analysis of CHPs.With a clarify of CHPs’ definition and scope,home products as a whole are taken as the research object,and the paper focuses on the creative design types of CHPs.The types are summarized through a cluster analysis of existing products in five areas: form,function,interaction,material,and connotation.Then three representative CHPs brands are explored for the case study,and three major development trends of CHPs are concluded.Based on the study above,four design principles and six design strategies for CHPs based on EDD from perspectives of product form,function,use and connotation are proposed in the third part.According to the theoretical research,an innovative home planting product was designed in the last part.The design positioning and demographic targeting are first defined by analyzing existing products.Then,through quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews,the needs and pain points in home planting activities of young consumers aged between 20 and 30 are obtained.Users’ specific needs are extracted through character portraits and scenario building to set product functions.Finally,the product is designed on both hardware and software levels.Using EDD to guide CHPs design,shifting the focus of design to planning for the longevity of products,can provide a new design perspective to address the current sustainable development dilemma.
