Modern residential historical blocks are an important type in the protection and renewal of historical districts in China, which mainly distributed in the eastern coastal areas of China and the Yangtze River Basin. In order to reveal the commonality and individuality, advantages and disadvantages, key points and difficulties of the protection and renewal of modern residential historic blocks in a cross-regional context, this paper selects the government-led pattern represented by Pichaiyuan, the spontaneous pattern of residents represented by Tianzifang, the multiple interactive participation pattern represented by Yongqingfang for comparative research on the basis of classifying the protection and renewal pattern of modern residential historic blocks. The comparison of the protection and renewal patterns of three typical blocks revolves around the "ternary dialectic" in spatial production theory: the first dimension is the updated spatial morphological characteristics, the second dimension is the update mechanism behind the spatial morphological renewal, and the third dimension is the awareness and evaluation of tourists and citizens after the renewal of typical blocks. The comparative conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)The similarities of the spatial forms of the three typical blocks are that the physical environment of the updated blocks has been improved, the functional formats have been replaced, and the culture has been protected. The differences are the degree of improvement of the material environment, the diversification of functional formats, the continuity of social life and the degree of cultural activation. In general, the protection and renewal of the multiple interactive participation pattern represented by Yongqingfang has the best effect, followed by the spontaneous pattern of residents represented by Tianzifang, and finally the government-led pattern represented by Pichaiyuan.(2)The similarities of the three typical neighborhood renewal mechanisms are that they all require government guidance and investment, all involve the relocation of residents, all aim at tourism development, and all take complete protection as the principle. The difference is the role, motivation and pattern of protection and renewal, which indirectly affects the strength, efficiency and sustainability of typical neighborhood protection and renewal. On the whole, the guarantee mechanism of residents’ spontaneous protection and renewal pattern represented by Tianzifang has outstanding advantages, but the implementation mechanism of multiple interactive participation protection and renewal pattern represented by Yongqingfang has outstanding advantages.(3)After the renewal of the three typical blocks, the individual image and structural image of the same group follow the common cognitive logic, and the cognition reflects the regionality of the block. The difference is that the personality image of Yongqingfang and Tianzifang is superior to that of Pichaiyuan, while structural imagery and emotional imagery of Yongqingfang is superior to Tianzifang,Tianzifang is superior to Pichaiyuan. Therefore, the implementation effect of the updated Yongqingfang is the best, followed by Tianzifang, and finally the Pichai Courtyard. After comparison,it can be seen that the comprehensive advantages of the diversified interactive participation pattern represented by Yongqingfang are the most prominent, which is a case worthy of reference for the protection and renewal of other modern residential historical blocks. The evaluation results of Yongqingfang show that under the principle of completely protecting the spatial pattern of the historic district, the greater the renewal of buildings, the higher the quality of street space, the more diversified the functional formats, the higher the degree of cultural activation can lead to the better the implementation effect. Finally, taking three typical blocks as examples, the author clarifies the commonality and individuality, advantages and disadvantages, key points and difficulties of the protection and renewal of modern residential historic blocks.and further points out the scope of application and optimization strategies of the three models represented by the three typical blocks. In addition, the study points out the scope of application and optimization strategies of the three patterns represented by three typical blocks.
