The Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien and Western Expatriate Camp was founded in 1883.After reconstruction and expansion,it developed into the headquarters of North American Christian Church in Shandong Province. At the same time,it also had the most high-end hospital in Jiaodong and Guangwen University, known as "Harvard of China".At the end of 1941,the Japanese invaders occupied the camp and secretly transformed it into the largest concentration camp for Western expatriates in Asia with the largest number of prisoners. It was used to detain the Allies in China, which became a very special modern architectural heritage with the international background of war in China. As time goes by,only seven of the 70 buildings that once covered more than 200 mu remain.Because of its unique historical experience,Weixian Ledao Academy and Western overseas Chinese concentration Camp has been rated as a national first-class museum,a national patriotism education demonstration base and a national key cultural relic protection unit, and helped Weifang become an International Peace City in 2021.After searching relevant research results,it is found that the research results of The Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien and Western Expatriate Camp focus on the history, society, management and other aspects, and rarely involve the architectural level.Compared with other modern architectural heritages of the same period,The Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien has two main differences: first,it has a typical nature of World War II international heritage.Although it has not been a concentration camp for Western expatriates for a long time,as a witness of unique history, its architectural value has a special place. In view of the lack of research on The Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien, this thesis takes the whole Western overseas concentration camp as the background, takes the Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien as the object, combines the research results of domestic and foreign concentration camp types, and conducts an architectural study on the remaining single buildings and spatial layout,in order to fill the research gap in China.Second, although the original buildings are badly damaged, the special heritage nature and historical significance make their protection and utilization methods different.Based on the comprehensive study of the remaining buildings of the Courtyard of the Happy Way in Weihsien, this thesis aims at the existing problems in the protection and utilization, and formulates the comprehensive protection and utilization strategies,so as to summarize and popularize them to other buildings of the same type. The first chapter of this thesis is an introduction, which discusses the background, purpose and significance of the study, the object of the study and the content of the study, organizes the relevant achievements at home and abroad, proposes the research method and research framework, and provides the theoretical basis for the subsequent study. The second chapter provides an overall overview of the western expatriate concentration camps in China, and clarifies the representative status of the Courtyard of the Happy Way through relevant studies such as historical background and preservation status. The third chapter is a historical study, which systematically composes the historical evolution of the Courtyard of the Happy Way by dividing the development stages through major events. The fourth chapter is an architectural study, which provides an in-depth analysis of the spatial function layout and architectural art features of the Courtyard of the Happy Way from a professional perspective. The fifth chapter is the conservation strategy and utilization measures, which compares the current situation of the conservation project of the Courtyard of the Happy Way,analyzes the existing problems, and proposes the subsequent architectural research and conservation utilization strategy of the Courtyard of the Happy Way in combination with the research results of this thesis,so as to provide reference for the architectural research and conservation utilization of western expatriate concentration camps in China. Finally, the concluding remarks analyze the strengths and weaknesses of this thesis, and provide an outlook for the subsequent research.
