Abstract/Summary:
As a regional unit with a long history and profound cultural origins,Jiangnan Water Village has given birth to many traditional villages. These villages carry the Jiangnan culture that has undergone thousands of years of evolution, transmutation, sublation, and integration. In the process of modernization, the spatial pattern and social customs of traditional villages have been greatly impacted, showing the characteristics of high fragmentation, isolation and marginalization, resulting in the loss of the original characteristics of traditional villages. Therefore, inheriting and continuing the regional characteristics of traditional villages has become one of the important issues in the protection of traditional villages.Taking Suzhou and Ningbo, the typical representatives of Wu and Yue culture as examples, this paper constructs an analytical framework from the perspective of pattern language, deconstructs the spatial layout of traditional villages in the two places, and makes a comparative analysis to explore the commonality and individuality of the spatial layout characteristics of traditional villages in the two places.Aiming at the existing problems in the spatial layout of traditional villages in Jiangnan water towns,a strategy for continuation and optimization is proposed.First of all, based on the research review, the spatial layout of traditional villages is deconstructed hierarchically, and it is divided into two levels: macro-scale overall pattern and middle-micro-scale ontology space.Constructing the analysis framework of the spatial layout characteristics of traditional villages combined with pattern language theory.Secondly, the analysis framework is used to deconstruct the spatial layout of traditional villages in Suzhou and Ningbo. The first step is to obtain the spatial layout data of traditional villages by using Google Earth, aerial photography of drones, and field surveys to take photos. The second step combines the method of schema language to simplify and abstract the concrete spatial data, extract the key features of the spatial layout, and interpret the formation logic of the spatial layout. The third step is to further explore the cultural connotation behind the characteristics of its spatial layout in combination with relevant humanistic materials.Thirdly, compare the spatial layout characteristics of traditional villages in Suzhou and Ningbo. From the macro level, the overall pattern of traditional villages in the two places shows the dominant feature of "dependence on mountains and rivers" and the recessive feature of "Modeling Heaven and Earth".From the perspective of the medium and micro level, there are obvious common characteristics and prominent individual characteristics in the spatial layout characteristics of the traditional villages in the two places, and the common features are the dominant features of " Tiny bridge, flowing brook, and cottages" and the recessive features of "Learn about soil and water regimes, respect the ceremony";in terms of individual features, the Suzhou area presents as " elegance and delicacy ".The dominant feature and the recessive feature of "generation in time",while the Ningbo area presents the dominant feature of "simplicity and diversity" and the recessive feature of " Respect the clan, pursuit the family harmony ".The differences in commonalities and individual characteristics are closely related to the spirit of regional culture. Finally, based on the inheritance of the connotation of the spatial layout of traditional villages in Jiangnan water towns, the paper reflects on the relevant problems and phenomena in the current practice of traditional village protection, and then proposes optimization strategies for the protection practice of traditional villages in Jiangnan water towns: Pay attention to the overall context and continue the humanistic feelings;repair the traditional vocabulary and continue the folk customs;identify the individual vocabulary and activate the regional characteristics.Only by firmly grasping the context of cultural heritage can we better protect traditional villages.
