Recently, the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan and the 2035 Vision and Goal Outline issued by the state proposed to promote the local classification and resource utilization of rural domestic waste. However,in the process of extensive pilot and in-depth promotion,it has gradually exposed problems such as low cognitive level and poor classification effect, often falling into the dilemma of strong government promotion and weak participation of residents.Previous studies have found that due to the imperfect promotion media and conditions in rural areas of China, rural residents’ consciousness of domestic waste sorting are at a low level, making it difficult to fully grasp the categories of household waste.Based on the principle of maximizing utility, obtaining effective information can reduce the degree of information asymmetry among rural residents, thereby changing the utility function and their behavioral decision-making.On the basis of reviewing relevant literature, this study attempts to analyze the impact of information sources on the willingness and behavior of rural residents to classify domestic waste, and explore the effectiveness of information sources,as well as whether there is a substitutive and complementary relationship between different information sources. Therefore, taking the rural areas of the Taihu Lake Lake Basin in Jiangsu Province as an example, this study designs questionnaires to measure the willingness and actual behavior of rural residents to classify domestic waste.A total of 1058 valid questionnaires were obtained.Based on this,an Ordered Logit model was constructed to empirically test the impact of household waste classification information sources on the willingness and behavior of rural residents to classify domestic waste. The substitution and complementarity effects between different information sources were discussed. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)At present, government propaganda is the most important source of information to improve the willingness and behavior of rural residents to classify domestic waste.(2)there is a substitute role between government propaganda and social network and the Internet, while social network and the Internet have complementary effects.(3)The effect of the three kinds of information sources on the household waste classification behavior of rural residents with different group characteristics is different.Accordingly, this study suggests that, local governments should develop appropriate household waste classification models, reasonably considering and fully utilizing the alternative role and the complementary role of different information resources, and activate the endogenous driving force of rural residents’ domestic waste classification. In addition, focus on improving the household waste classification behavior of rural residents with strong willingness but weak behavior.
