| Since the development of modernist design, users have become increasingly prominent as subjects in products and services. The participatory design approach gives users more opportunities to express their own needs, and their involvement in the whole design process allows the final output to be more relevant to the real application scenarios of users. As an important infrastructure in the campus life of students, the current design is no longer able to meet the growing needs of students. For a long time, students have had no say in the design of the dormitory space, which has been neglected as an important place for student interaction. The participatory design approach allows users to participate in the design decision making process in order to fully incorporate students’ views and design spaces and furniture that meet their expectations.Based on research into participatory design methods and concepts, this project integrates participatory design into the whole process of designing furniture for university activity spaces.Semi-structured interviews, user journey maps and KANO questionnaires were used to understand the real needs of students and to discover the functional needs of students for activity spaces:social interaction, learning and seminars and games.Conduct designer workshops and use the QFD Quality Functional Development model to accurately translate user needs into design requirements and rank the relative design requirement weights.Conduct co-design workshops to involve users in the whole process of design brainstorming, solution evolution, product testing and design improvement.Evaluate the prototype solution and refine it through usability testing to produce a design solution for activity spaces and furniture for university halls of residence. The concepts and practices are summarised and the final design strategy is produced. The significance of this research is to improve the design of furniture for university dormitory spaces from the perspective of participatory design,to enhance the dormitory living experience of university students, and to propose a participatory design strategy for the corresponding field of application. |
