"Co-Operation Partners":A Study Of China-Related Reporting By Borneo Bulletin

Against the background of Sino-US trade friction,the strategic significance of ASEAN countries is becoming more and more prominent.As a node of the Maritime Silk Road,Brunei advocates a "dual-track approach" on the South China Sea issue.Due to its strategic location,Brunei is of great significance for China to further carry out One Belt And One Road initiative.It is necessary to pay attention to China in the eyes of the Brunei media and understand the attitude and perception of the Brunei people towards the image of China.This paper selects the Borneo Bulletin as the research object to observe the China presented in its reports.There are five chapters in this paper.The introduction introduces the general situation of the research.The second chapter describes the general picture of China-related reports from 2009 to 2019 from five aspects,namely,the number of news,the length of news,the sources of news,the agendas of news and the orientation of news.It also counts the high-frequency words and finds that the content words with high frequency of reports basically revolves around the relations and cooperation between the two countries.The third chapter explains the report from five dimensions: politics,economy,culture,military and technology.The analysis shows that the media portrays China as a "partner" of Brunei,which is more like a "good friend" with geographical proximity and broad areas of cooperation.As a result,China is presented to be "positive".The fourth chapter explains the influence of Brunei mainstream media on the portrayal of China,such as the national conditions of Brunei,the influence of China as a big country that cannot be ignored and the external striving for a stable environment.The fifth chapter puts forward that the Brunei media shaping China is also constructing the Malay national identity,and the Chinese relationship has a proper distance.Thus,we should not only carefully look at the "positive China" report phenomenon,but also take the initiative to build a friendly China.
