In recent years, major fire incidents have occurred frequently, and fire news has increasingly attracted social attention.Behind the reports of fire incidents, the news media's ability to manage disaster news is also reflected, and the government image in the process of fire disaster relief is always conveyed. For the mass media, which function in environmental monitoring,it is an inescapable responsibility to do a good job in reporting on fire events. In fact, there are still some shortcomings in the improvement and development of fire news in China. In contrast, western media powers have more mature reports on catastrophic events including fires.Advice from others may help one overcome one's shortcomings. The author hopes to provide a reference for optimizing China's fire news coverage through a comparative study of Chinese and American fire news.On November 8th,2018 and March 30th,2019,two natural forest fires of the same nature occurred in Paradise Town,California,USA and Ya-lung River Town,Muli County,Liangshan Prefecture,Sichuan Province,China. The remote locations of the two fires, the complexity of the fire scene, and the difficulty of rescue operations,etc..quickly attracted widespread attention from the two countries and a lot of media reports from both countries. The author selects the reports of People's Daily and The Beijing News on the"Muli Wildfire"incident and compares them with the reports of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal on the"California Wildfire"incident.Within the set time range,an exhaustive search was performed to obtain complete and rich analysis materials. Moreover,a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted, and innovative framework categories were introduced on the basis of the framework theory from seven aspects:report topics, news sources, news tone, time distribution, report layout, professionalism and accuracy, and news visualization presentation. The study found that Chinese and US media have both similarities and differences in fire news reporting. The commonality lies in the fact that both of them focus on fire details and human concerns, rely on official government sources and maintain a neutral news tone;while the differences lie in the emphasis on reporting issues, the source of the news, the bias of news tone, timeliness and durability of reporting, the layout,etc..At the same time, the Chinese and American media are also different in terms of professionalism and accuracy, and the visual presentation of news. The"Muli Wildfire"report by two Chinese media revolved around rescuers, victims, survivors, mourners and others involved in the incident, forming a human and ethical framework;while the two US media placed the fire incident in a macro background and constructed, four pairs of conflicts were constructed, which caused the audience to think about the fire incident, and formed a unique attributive conflict framework. The different fire news frameworks of the media in the two countries are mainly determined by the differences in news regulation principles, the nature of the media and cultural traditions.Based on the advanced reporting experience at home and abroad, the author made the following prospects for domestic fire news reports:strengthen the reporting of fire incident itself;establish a fire news emergency reporting mechanism to seek multiple sources to meet the information needs of the audience;pay attention to the visual presentation of fire news;enrich the knowledge base of journalists.
