Since the 20th century,with the gradual improvement in the level of urbanization,the problem of city image has gradually become an important topic in the research of architecture,sociology,communication and other disciplines.With the rapid development of the urbanization,the competition between cities becomes increasingly fierce.The siphon effect of modern metropolis is obvious,which leads to the enlargement of big cities and the diminution of small cities and towns.Facing the cruel current situation of‘Thousands Of Cities In One Appearance'and realistic competition,the development of small cities has become an urgent urban problem.Especially with the point of Beautiful China Strategy in the 18th CPC National Congress and the Rural Vitalization Strategy in the 19th CPC National Congress presented,finding ideas to solve this problem becomes more realistic.Bying feat of the achievement of‘spatial turn'interdisciplinary research in the western academia in the second half of the 20thcentury,the domestic communication circles have also began to use urban space as a medium to discuss the spread of urban images.In the constructing and spreading the city image,The city not only provides the carrier in the material space,but also builds the meaningful space which through the action of contact realms of cities in the process of constructing and spreading its image.From the perspective of medium,this paper takes the festival activities in Xuan'en County of Hubei Province as the research object.Field investigation and Semi-structured interviews were used.Urban space is divided into three dimensions:physical space,communication space and media space in this paper.Taking these dimensions to analyze and discusse how to construct and spread the city image through the way of holding celebrations,and to explore the new mode of innovation and development of small cities.This paper is divided into five chapters and arranged according to the structure of deduction and summary.The first chapter describes the image of Xuan'en County by holding‘Two sessions,Three competitions,Four celebrations'.In the second,third and fourth chapters,the physical space,communication space and media space of the city are systematically analyzed.The fifth chapter excavates the experience from the successful cases of creating the city image of Xuan'en county,to explore the strategies of celebrations to construct and spread the city image,it puts forward the replicable development path of small cities and provides some reference for the development of other small cities and the construction and dissemination of city image.
