With the advent of a new generation of technological revolution centered on artificial intelligence(AI),major countries around the world, including China, have begun to consider AI as part of their national strategies. There is a growing awareness that AI not only has a positive effect on improving productivity and promoting economic growth, but also has important implications for labor force employment and income inequality. For a long time, economists have relatively analyzed the impact of AI on economic growth and labor force employment, but the theoretical analysis of how AI affects income inequality is still immature and controversial, and direct empirical analysis of AI's impact on income inequality is even more scarce. This paper presents a relatively systematic study of the impact of AI on income inequality through theoretical mechanism analysis and relevant empirical tests.First, this paper first introduces the emergence and development history of AI,and then analyzes the impact mechanism of AI on economic operation from the technical characteristics of AI.Then, the current situation of AI development in China is analyzed from the perspectives of development environment and technology status, and finally, the current situation of income inequality in China is introduced through the interpretation of the main income inequality data indicators.Secondly, based on the existing research, this paper analyzes the theoretical mechanism of AI affecting the income inequality of Chinese residents from the perspectives of AI affecting overall income inequality, urban income inequality, rural income inequality, and urban-rural income inequality by combining the current situation of AI development in China and the current situation of income inequality of Chinese residents, and further analyzes the regional heterogeneity of AI influence on residents' income inequality is further analyzed. At the same time, based on the results of the theoretical mechanism analysis, five hypotheses are proposed for the impact of AI on the income inequality of Chinese residents.Third, based on the existing literature and available data, this paper adopts the Gini coefficient and urban-rural income ratio as the explanatory variables, constructs a panel data fixed-effects model for 24 provinces from 2001 to 2012,and by using least squares dummy variable regression(LSDV),obtains the results of AI on overall income inequality, urban income inequality, rural income inequality and urban-rural income inequality The regression results are analyzed and concluded that: the development of AI significantly expands the overall income inequality of residents, urban income inequality, rural income inequality and urban-rural income inequality, but the degree of impact is relatively small;in addition, the impact of AI development on residents' income inequality is regionally heterogeneous.Fourth, based on the theoretical mechanism analysis and direct empirical analysis of AI's impact on income inequality in this paper, relevant policy recommendations are put forward from five perspectives, including government planning and guidance, industrial development and employment creation, higher education and education training, social security and re-employment training, and urban-rural resource allocation and regional industrial development,in order to better play the positive role of AI on economic growth and income inequality. The innovation of this paper is that it analyzes the theoretical mechanism of AI affecting income inequality from five perspectives, and empirically analyzes the effects of AI on overall income inequality, urban income inequality, rural income inequality and urban-rural income inequality, and the regional heterogeneity of AI affecting income inequality, using Gini coefficient and urban-rural income ratio as the explanatory variables, respectively.
