Due to the instability of work and the objective conditions of residence,education and care,some individuals choose to leave their minor children in their hometowns under the supervision and care of others,resulting in the emergence of a large number of children left behind in rural areas.The rural labour force has made positive contributions to Chinese economic construction and played an important role in improving the economic situation of their own families,objectively creating a certain material basis and conditions for the education and growth of their children,but it has also led to some children being separated from their parents for long periods of time,lacking affectionate care and effective supervision,developing mental health problems and even extreme behaviour,and suffering from accidental injuries and even unlawful abuse.These problems seriously affect the healthy growth of children and social harmony and stability,and are of great concern to all parties and have strong social repercussions.This paper attempts to analyse the effectiveness of social work projects for the development of left-behind children,explore how the social support system for the development of left-behind children can be improved,and further propose a path for the construction of a social support system for left-behind children by the government,families,schools,communities and social organisations.The study finds that social work projects can have an impact on the social support system of left-behind children,and their weak and unstable social support network can be constructed through the operation of the projects.Before the operation of the project each subject though did not support the left-behind children closely and faced with different dilemmas,each subject was not able to construct a social support system that could play a sustainable role for the left-behind children.Through the analysis of the current situation of the development of left-behind children and the reflection on the service situation of the project,the structure of the social support system for the development of left-behind children in the community is derived: government-led,family-based,school-core,community-based and social organisations as lubricants.It is also argued that by advocating the participation of diversified subjects,developing self-help organisations for left-behind children,strengthening the management norms of service subjects,clarifying the relationship between support subjects and nurturing social organisations,enhancing their professional capacity,and each subject doing its own job,a set of operating mechanisms for a social support system for the development of left-behind children is constructed with reference.
