Grit was defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals.Previous researches on successful people have established that grit is an important predictor of achievement.The concept of grit has brought about the widespread attention in the field of the education.However,relevant research on grit has only begun in the last ten years,and the relationship between grit and many positive psychological traits is unclear.Subjective well-being is an important indicator of quality of life in positive psychology.Although it has been proved that grit can improve subjective well-being,its mechanism still needs to be further explored.In organismic valuing process theory,Rogers believes that when conditions permit,individuals tend to choose goals that are beneficial to personal growth and development,and preferring actualizing and socialized goals is a universal or species-specific human adaptive behaviors.According to this view,in the process of achieving development and happiness,initiative and awareness of goals are necessary conditions.Personal growth initiative refers to individuals consciously and actively improving themselves from both cognitive and behavioral aspects with the intention of personal growth.Hope is a kind of dynamic cognitive motivation system,including the motivation of pursuing goals and the cognition of how to achieve goals.The current study infers that personal growth initiative and hope mediate the relationship between grit and subjective well-being.The current study used the Short Grit Scale,Personal Growth Initiative scale-Ⅱ,Children’s Hope Scale,Satisfaction with Life Scale,Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for 850 students in Xi’an Qujiang No.1 High School.SPSS 25.0 was used to process the collected data.The results are as follows.(1)There are certain gender and grade differences in middle school students’ grit,personal growth initiative,hope and subjective well-being.The level of grit and hope of boys is significantly higher than those of girls.There were no significant gender difference in personal growth initiative and subjective well-being between boys and girls;Grit,personal growth initiative,hope and subjective well-being of grade one were significantly higher than those of grade two.(2)There is a significant positive correlation between grit,personal growth initiative,hope,and subjective well-being.(3)Grit,personal growth initiative and hope were significantly positive predictors of subjective well-being;Personal growth initiative and hope were significantly positively predicted by grit;Personal growth initiative has a significant positive predictive effect on hope.(4)Middle school students’ personal growth initiative and hope mediate the relationship between grit and subjective well-being.In summary,this study finds that grit influence a person’s subjective well-being,and this effect is achieved through multiple mediating effects of growth initiative and hope.It also reminds us that not only grit,but also the cultivation of personal growth initiative and hope will improve the subjective well-being of middle school students. |
