A Study On The Relationship Among Parenting Styles,personality Traits,and Personal Growth Initiative Of Middle School Students

With the development of positive psychology,as an important quality of positive psychology,personal growth initiative has been widely concerned by researchers.Personal growth initiative refers to the consciousness and psychological tendency of individuals,which actively promotes and improves themselves during the growing process,at the same time,it will be influenced by individual and environmental factors.Therefore,how to adjust the internal and external factors to promote personal growth initiative of middle school students is of great significance.In this study,middle school students were selected as subjects by using the Short-Egna Minnenav Barndoms Uppfostran revised by Jiang Jiang and others.,the Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory brief version compiled by Wang Mengcheng and others,and the Adolescent Students’ Personal Growth Initiative Scale compiled by Guo Jichang.And a questionnaire survey was conducted on 824 middle school students in Fujian and Hebei provinces,then SPSS22.0 was used for data analysis.The relationship among personal personality traits,growth initiative and parenting styles was discussed.The main conclusions are as follows:Firstly,personal growth initiative of middle school students were at the upper-middle level,and there were significant differences in birthplaces,schooling styles,grades,and parental education levels;Personality traits was at the upper-middle level,and there were significant differences in gender,schooling styles,one-child or not,grades,and parental education levels;In each dimension of parenting styles,parental emotional warmth was at the middle-to-upper level,while the parental rejection and over-protection were at the middle-to-lower level,and there were significant differences in gender,birthplace,schooling styles,grade and parental education levels.Secondly,the neuroticism in personality traits of middle school students was significantly negatively related to personal growth initiative,and the remaining four dimensions(rigorousness,pleasantness,openness,and extroversion)were significantly positively related to personal growth initiative;The parental emotional warmth was significantly negatively related to neuroticism,and the remaining four dimensions were significantly positively related to parental emotional warmth;Parental over-protection was significantly positively related to neuroticism,while significantly negatively related to rigorousness;Parental rejection was significantly positively related to neuroticism,and rigorousness,pleasantness and parental rejection are significantly negatively related;Parental emotional warmth was significantly positively related to personal growth initiative,parental over-protection and rejection were associated with personal growth initiative.Thirdly,parental rejection of middle school students has significantly positive predictive effects on the neuroticism personality while parental over-protection has significantly positive predictive effects on the pleasantness.Parental emotional warmth has significantly negative predictive effects on the neuroticism,however positive predictive effects on the other four kinds of personality(rigorousness,pleasantness,openness,and extroversion).Moreover,the neuroticism and parental rejection and over-protection have significantly negative predictive effects on personal growth initiative.Meanwhile,the pleasantness,rigorousness,openness,extraversion and parental emotional warmth have significantly positive predictive effects on personal growth initiative.Fourthly,the neuroticism of middle school students which plays a part of mediating role between parental emotional warmth and personal growth initiative,parental rejection and personal growth initiative respectively,also plays a complete mediating role between parental over-protection and personal growth initiative.The pleasantness partly mediates between father rejection and personal growth initiative;Each dimension of personality trait plays a partial mediating role between parental emotional warmth and personal growth initiative.And rigorousness was a complete mediator between parental over-protection and personal growth initiative,parental rejection and personal growth initiative respectively.
