Abstract/Summary:
Since the implementation of reform and opening up in 1978,a lot of English publications have been introduced into China, and plenty of them, including many social science texts, have been translated into Chinese. However, few of these translations delved into the development of fashion and the intimations in social life.Besides, the translation of social science texts also lacks theoretical guidance. In this translation report, the translator selected chapters from the social science text The Messages We Send, written by G.R.F.Ferrari,to do the case study. The selected chapters, probing into the concepts of and views on fashion and intimation, present many difficulties for translation. In this circumstance, the translator chose to use Nord’s translation-oriented text analysis model to guide this case study. The model requires the translator to compare the functions of the ST and TT through the translation commission, and to analyze the ST through eight intratextual factors and eight extratextual factors. It can help the translator deeply understand the complex text and decide on the translation strategies.Under the guidance of this theory, the translator first analyzed the translation commission and found that the functional type of translation to be produced is instrumental translation. After the comprehensive analysis of the ST,the translator found that four intratextual factors, content, presuppositions, sentence structure, and suprasegmental features, significantly influence the translation of this text. Therefore, the translator discussed respectively on these factors, following the principles of instrumental translation and elaborating with specific cases on the translation difficulties caused by these factors and the translation strategies. The report proves that Nord’s Text Analysis Model can offer constructive support in translating texts of this type through the translation practice and the case study.Under the guidance of this theory, some translation strategies are also concluded in the report, including adding and transferring linking devices to ensure the coherence and cohesion of the TT,using the methods of amplification and annotation to explain the presuppositions, applying the methods of restructuring, reproducing and integrating to deal with the complicated sentence structures,as well as omitting and transferring some punctuations to address the suprasegmental features. These strategies, making the translation more fluent and understandable, may offer references for other translators.
