This report is an English-Chinese translation practice report of academic texts. The translation material is the first two chapters of Linguistic Coping Strategies in Sign Language Interpreting, written by Jemina Napier in 2016.There exist numerous deaf people in China, and a considerable number of them need the help of sign language interpreters when communicating with the listeners. However, there are a few practices and researches on sign language interpretating in China. Therefore, the translator’s practice has certain practical significance.According to the lexical, syntactic and textual features of Linguistic Coping Strategies in Sign Language Interpreting, the translator chooses Nord’s text analysis model as the theoretical guidance.Through the analysis of the extratextual factors of the source text, the translator finds that the function of both the target text and the original text is to provide the readers with relevant information about sign language interpretating.Based on the analysis of the intratextual factors of the source text, the problems that the translator needs to solve at lexical level mainly include the translation of terms,non-finite verbs, prepositions, pronouns and rhetorical structures. With the help of the Ant Conc, the average sentence length and the frequency of the structure of “be + past participle” in the original text are calculated. The problems that the translator needs to solve at syntactic level mainly include the translation of compound sentences, complex sentences and passive sentences. The translator has to deal with the dashes and parentheses reasonably at suprasegmental level.Under the guidance of Nord’s text analysis model,in order to improve the accuracy of the translation, the translator uses techniques such as addition, omission, conversion, annotation, explicitness and implicitness to solve the translation problems at lexical level;in order to enhance the readability of the translation, the translator uses techniques such as inversion of word order, conversion of voice and division to solve the translation problems at syntactic level;in order to improve the fluency of the translation, the translator uses techniques such as conversion from dashes into language, retention or removal of parentheses to solve the problems at suprasegmental level. This translation report summarizes the common problems in the Chinese translation of academic texts, and discusses the countermeasures in detail under the guidance of Nord’s text analysis model, which can provide enlightenment for scholars who use Nord’s text analysis model and other perspectives to explore the Chinese translation techniques of academic texts. The translator hopes to provide some valuable references for sign language interpreters and those who conduct sign language interpreting studies. She also hopes that sufficient attention from more scholars can be given to the linguistic strategies in sign language interpreting.
