| Reading Circle,or Literature Circle is a teaching method to help students develop their reading habits while enjoying reading as well as an effective form of group cooperative learning.The practice of reading circle follows the steps of reading,thinking,sharing and evaluation.In the class,students participate in reading activities,derive pleasure from reading,and learn to cooperate and share with others,and in this way they become organizers and leaders,rather than participants.Moreover,because it is of great importance for international students to improve their Chinese reading,the pedagogy on reading has always been a hot spot in the research field.However,it is a common phenomenon that foreign students do poorly in Chinese reading and are rarely interested in it.Besides,they have seriously insufficient Chinese extra-curricular reading,show little confidence,and have unsatisfactory reading habits.Against this background,through the experimental research of the Reading Circle Teaching method in the intermediate Chinese reading class for foreigners,this paper probes into the effective ways of teaching Chinese reading,so as to help international students to improve their reading competence,change their reading attitude and habits,and become more confident in their reading practice.The study is based on the experiment on two parallel classes.Both the experimental and control classes use the same Chinese textbook,and have intermediate Chinese proficiency.For the experimental class,the reading circle teaching method is adopted,while for the control class the traditional reading teaching method is employed.This research mainly uses the quantitative and qualitative research method based on the conduction of the experimental,a questionnaire survey and an interview.First,it explains the teaching method of Reading Circle through a literature review.Then,through the comparison of the two teaching experiments,this paper expounds the application process of reading-circle teaching method.Specifically,a semester-long teaching experiment,the experimental pre-test and post-test and classroom observation are conducted,with the data analyzed in-depth.The study has conducted 10 teaching experiments in both experimental and control classes,and conducted a pre-test,a post-test and the classroom observation of the experiment oriented toward students’ reading ability and reading attitude.The findings are as follows.First,through the independent sample t-test,the results show that the reading circle teaching method can improve the reading ability of foreign students.Second,using the ITIAS analysis system to explore the effectiveness of classroom teaching,we find that reading circle can help improve the verbal interaction between students and teachers and change the students’ attitude on reading.To make reading circle better applicable to the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language,the author puts forward the following teaching suggestions.First,teachers should improve their reading literacy.Second,teachers had better teach students in accordance with their aptitude.Third,they should pay attention to the diversity of evaluation methods.Fourth,group members should respect their own views.Last,reading and writing are expected to be organically combined.This paper hopes that the teaching method of reading circle can be used to help international students in the reading class,so that it can be extended to Chinese reading class. |
