Memorizing English words is very important for junior middle school students,while students’ English performance is largely limited by their vocabulary.However,there seems to lack correct way to memorize English words more efficiently.Only relying on the traditional IPA teaching method makes the words memorizing boring,and the effect is not obvious,and thus it is easy to make students tired of learning.Phonics is a basic method of learning the mother tongue in English-speaking countries,which becomes more and more popular in China.This method can effectively develop the phonetic awareness of the students,who can spell out some simple words by utilizing this method,but since there is no language environment,so it’s hard to determine the stressed syllables or read some complicated words.This thesis mainly studies two problems: 1.Can the combination of IPA and Phonics improve the motivation on memorizing English words of junior middle school students? 2.Can the combination of IPA and Phonics improve the efficiency on memorizing English words of junior middle school students? Take the students of a junior middle school as the research object,the teaching strategy of combining Phonics with IPA are used in the experimental class,and the control class will carry out another one,the traditional IPA teaching strategy.The experiment lasts for a whole semester.Two classes were tested for the word spelling ability,combining ability of sound and spelling and words memorizing speed.Statistical data were finally come into view.Subsequently,the results will show whether the combination of IPA and Phonics method is excellent enough to improve the memorizing efficiency of English words of students that study in middle school.At the same time,in order to explore another question,whether the combination of IPA and Phonics can improve the motivation of junior middle school students to remember English words,the author also conducted questionnaire statistics on the research participants and conducted whole-course follow-up interviews with the teachers.The research results are as follows: On the one hand,the combination of Phonics and IPA is significantly conducive to improving the motivation of junior middle school students to memorize English words.This method of learning gives students a stronger phonetic awareness,makes it easier to spell and read a new word of simple rule.This technique greatly reduces the psychological distance between students and new English words.And the results are presented in two aspects: improvement on students’ interest and improvement on students’ self-efficiency of memorizing English words.Eventually,students have better motivation to spell any word they come across.On the other hand,the combination of Phonics and IPA is significantly conducive to improving the efficiency of junior middle school students in memorizing English words.It can be seen from three aspects.One aspect is that students’ phonetic and spelling awareness are significantly improved: by learning the pronunciation of individual letters and some letter groups,students can deepen the corresponding awareness of letters and pronunciation in their minds,and consolidate it through repeated practice of Rise courseware and some interesting interactive practices.The second aspect is that students’ combining ability of sound and spelling are significantly improved: optimized phonetic and spelling awareness can improve the efficiency of recognizing the pronunciation of words and ensure the correct spelling according to the pronunciation,thus significantly improving the efficiency of the combination of sounds and spellings in autonomous acquisition.Last but not least,the word memorizing speed are greatly improved by using the combination of Phonics and IPA,which can more intuitively reflect the efficiency improvement on memorizing English words of junior middle school students.When teaching the method of combining Phonics and IPA,the teacher should take learning transfer and Ebbinghaus forgetting curve as the theoretical guidance,and mainly aim to integrate the two aspects well flexibly,so as to develop students’ phonetic awareness step by step,instead of being too impatient.
