A famous British linguist Willings said that people cannot express many things without grammar, however people cannot express anything without vocabulary,so the importance of vocabulary is described by this linguist vividly. In addition,English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)also puts forward higher requirements on English vocabulary learning, which clearly stipulates that junior middle school students should learn to use about 1600 English words and it requires students to read and spell English vocabulary based on their pronunciation. However, there are still some problems of English words teaching in China, such as lacking effective vocabulary teaching methods or paying insufficient attention to the teaching of English vocabulary. These problems lead that most students can only learn English words with rote memorization so that their ability of English words reading and spelling have never been improved effectively, and it decreases students' interest in English words learning or affects their English learning ability directly. Therefore,it is necessary to explore a suitable method for junior middle school students' English words learning. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of phonics instruction on vocabulary learning of junior middle school students through the teaching experiment. This research took students of Class 3 and Class 1 of Grade 7 of 41 st Corps School as the research objects based on Constructivism and Behaviorism.Among them,Class 3 and Class 1 are the experimental class and the control class respectively. And the teaching experiment lasted for four months.Phonics was adopted to teach students' words in experimental class while the traditional vocabulary teaching method was still adopted to teach students' words in control class.Meanwhile, vocabulary test method, questionnaire method, and the classroom observation method were applied by the author to gather data in the process ofthe teaching experiment. This paper discusses the influence of phonics on vocabulary teaching of junior middle school students from the aspects of words reading, spelling and learning interest. The main research questions are as follows.1.Can phonics stimulate students' interest in English words learning in Junior Middle School?2.Can phonics improve students' ability of English words reading and spelling in Junior Middle School? The results of the study demonstrates that the application of phonics in Junior Middle School English vocabulary teaching can improve students' ability of English words reading and spelling and enhance their interest in English words learning. At last, the author draws three inspirations from the teaching experiment. The first one is that teachers need to actively learn phonics and adopt phonics into vocabulary teaching.Teachers' knowledge of phonics plays an important role in students' acceptance of phonics. So it is necessary for teacher to improve their mastery of phonics to enhance teaching efficiency to reduce students' learning burden. The second one is that students should actively change the concept that vocabulary learning is not important and actively learn the knowledge of phonics imparted by teacher, which is the key point to improve students' interest in English words learning and enhance their reading and spelling ability. The third one is that it is necessary for school's leader to provide related books about phonics and actively organize workshops on phonics to promote teachers' phonics learning. If English teacher masters phonics sufficiently,he would also guide students to master the pronunciation rules of phonics effectively and improve students' English words learning ability and learning interest.
