A Report On C-E Translation Of Tribute To White Poplars(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Tribute to White Poplars,a collection of essays by Mao Dun,contains his essays written from the 1920 s to the 1940 s.The translator selected the first eight essays to translate.Emotionally,the essays reflect Mao Dun’s worries and dissatisfaction with the society at that time;linguistically,Chinese four-character idioms,run-on sentences,culture-loaded words and dialects are employed so that the unique charm of Chinese is shown.Thus,translating the eight essays is conducive not only to make target readers gain more knowledge about Chinese society and history at that time but also to spread Chinese culture.The report contains five chapters.Chapter one introduces the translation task.Chapter two describes the translation process.Chapter three presents the framework of ecotranslatology,including the concepts of adaptation,selection and three-dimensional transformation and the feasibility to the translation project.Chapter four focuses on the case analysis from the perspective of eco-translatology.Chapter five is the conclusion.Based on the Chinese to English translation practice of Tribute to White Poplars(Excerpts),the report,from the perspective of eco-translatology raised by Professor Hu Gengshen,not only discusses the adaptive selection in linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions but also summarizes the adopted translation methods and techniques.As for the adaptive selection in linguistic dimension,the translator mainly adopts literal translation,paraphrase,shift and reconstruction to translate Chinese fourcharacter idioms,reduplication,run-on sentences and so on.As for that in cultural dimension,free translation and idiomatic translation can be adopted to solve difficulties of cultural equivalence while literal translation with annotation is adopted to solve difficulties of cultural loss.As for that in communicative dimension,for reproducing the communicative intentions and effects,the translator mainly adopts free translation,idiomatic translation,paraphrase,etc.The report provides some references for studies related to eco-translatology.
