On C-E Translation Of Political Essays From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

The year of 2019 saw the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China whose Major-Country Diplomacy embarked on a new journey at the time.As the world's second largest economy and one of the most influential emerging market countries,China has received extensive attention from the international community.In the meantime,it has been taking a more active stance to win the worldwide recognition and respect.Hence,it is of paramount importance for China to strengthen its external publicity at present,which plays an indispensable role to introduce the governing philosophy,policies and political stance of the Chinese government.The inerrant C-E translation of publicity materials plays a crucial part in safeguarding China's national interests and improving China's international image.However,the research on translation of political essays hasn't been given adequate attention in the academic world.Although the translation of these essays is of overriding importance,the related theoretical studies are far from adequate,thus leading to insufficient theoretical guidance for this type of translation practice as well as the unsatisfactory quality of the translation.Therefore,it is imperative to carry out more thorough and detailed studies on the C-E translation of political essays.Based on her translation practice of Report on the Work of the Wuhan Government(2019),the present author,taking eco-translatology as the theoretical basis,conducts a research from the perspective of the three-dimensional transformation in the hope of exploring some effective translation strategies and methods that can be adopted and applied in the translation of political essays.The thesis begins with an introduction to the research background,task profile and significance of the study.Then in the next chapter the task process is presented,which includes several important issues in preliminary preparation,translating process and post-translation work.In this part,emphasis is put on introducing the textual characteristics of political essays and the relevant requirements for translation based on these characteristics.Next in the third chapter of theoretical basis,the Eco-translatology put forward by Hu Gengshen is introduced,which involves some core concepts,such as translational eco-environment,translation as Adaption and Selection and the three-dimensional transformation.Besides,a discussion is made about the application of eco-translatology in political essay translation.Then in the body part,the author carries out an in-depth analysis of a number of translation examples from linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions,with the attention paid to the translation at lexical,syntactic and rhetorical levels and the conveyance of cultural information and the transmission of communicative intention embodied in the source text.It can be concluded from the present research that,when translating political essays from Chinese to English,the translator is supposed to flexibly and appropriately adopt different translation strategies,methods and techniques so as to make the translation fit and survive in its translational eco-environment.To be more specific,the translation method of literal translation plus annotation may be adopted to handle numeral shortened expressions so as to reveal their connotations as well as denotations;the technique of omission may be employed to render repetitive expressions so as to make the translation concise and clear;the technique of addition may be used to handle null-subject sentences in order to make the translation not only structurally complete but also conform to the syntactic conventions of English language;the method of liberal translation(including loan translation)may be adopted to deal with certain Chinese sayings,proverbs and quotations which defy literal translation method so as to make the translation natural,idiomatic and well acceptable.It is expected that the present may provide some different angles for the translation practice of political essays,and offer some useful reference for and insight into the further exploration of political essay translation.
