Food security is an issue that cannot be ignored hitherto by the international community. Therefore, conferences and discussions have been held seeking possible solutions to this problem. The impromptu speeches in food security conferences are characterized by prominent colloquialness, lots of slips of tongue and loose discourse structures, resulting in a large amount of redundant information which brings difficulties for simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, the aim of this report is to explore probable interpreting skills that can be used to tackle these obstacles.Although many scholars have taken notice of information redundancy in translated texts, few of them put forward relevant systematic translation theories.Compression Strategy proposed by Chernov,in view of language hierarchies, provides an inspiration for the processing of redundant information in E-C simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, this report tries to combine Chernov’s Compression Strategy with simulated simultaneous interpreting in international food security conferences, and by analyzing the transcribed speeches from three conferences, summarizes interpreting skills from four levels: lexis, syntax, semantics and situation.A battery of instances from the practice is chosen to prove the feasibility of the very strategy. It is concluded that by reducing the interpreter’s cognitive loads and delivering messages correctly and concisely,Compression Strategy is indeed useful for improving interpreting quality and performance.
