A Study On English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting In Medical Conferences Guided By Compression Strategy

As people attach greater importance to health care,more and more medical conferences and exchanges are held in China,which offers more opportunities for medical conference interpreters.Studies on simultaneous interpreting of medical conference,however,are far from enough,let alone tactics on it.The author of the thesis aims to solve the problems in simultaneous interpreting of medical conferences by analyzing the transcribed speeches from Brookings.Medical conferences bring challenges to interpreters for professional terminology,fast speed of speakers and much redundant information.Therefore,Interpreters need to employ useful tactics to replace meaningless messages with concise expressions to save more time.The author,summarizing the characteristics of simultaneous interpreting in medical conferences and principles of Chernov's Compression Strategy,elaborates on the application of Compression Strategy from the perspective of syllabic,lexical,syntactic,semantic and situational compression.A train of examples from the practice are selected to prove the credibility of Compression Strategy.It turns out that the application of Compression Strategy not only can save more time for interpreters but also improve the interpreting quality.
