This paper is an examination and analysis of the use of compression strategies in Chinese-Japanese simultaneous interpreting.Compression is a common strategy in simultaneous interpreting, which can not only relieve the cognitive pressure of the interpreters brought by the fast speed of the source language, but also contribute to the listeners' understanding of the target language. This paper takes two mock conferences,“Beijing Metro Talk Show of People's Daily ” and “Shanghai Metro Talk Show of Innovation Times” as the cases for analysis,in which the author and the professional interpreter conduct simultaneous interpreting separately. Then, the author transcribes the recordings of himself and the professional interpreter, and compares and analyzes the interpreting based on the contents of these two mock conferences. On this basis, referring to Chernov's classification method, the author divides compression into syllabic compression, lexical compression, syntactic compression and semantic compression, and summarizes some compression strategies applicable to Chinese-Japanese simultaneous interpreting. It mainly includes the use of abbreviations;the use of Chinese vocabulary;the conversion of verb phrases into noun phrases;the use of noun to end sentences;the vague processing of vulnerable information and so on.By using these strategies, interpreters can effectively simplify the interpreting and maintain the synchronization between the target language and the source language. This paper summarizes a series of specific compression strategies from the author's interpreting practice in order to provide some referring materials and new ideas for the study and practice of Chinese-Japanese simultaneous interpreting learners.
