A Practice Report On The Translation Of Lipsy Supplier Manual From The Perspective Of Register Theory (Excerpts)

With international trade exchanges getting frequent,the cooperation between enterprises and suppliers in various countries are also increasing,and the trade activities are becoming more standardized.As one of the indispensable documents for foreign trade activities,supplier manual is a very binding document for suppliers.It requires suppliers to abide by the relevant regulations put forward by the company and produce qualified products during the cooperation with the company,which means that the translation of supplier manual is particularly important in this activity.This translation practice material comes from Lipsy supplier manual provided by Huayi Clothing Co.,Ltd.,a clothing supplier.From the perspective of register theory proposed by linguist Halliday,this report analyzes the source text from three aspects:field,tenor and mode.In the source text,it features professional field of discourse,objective tenor of discourse and formal mode of discourse.The translator closely integrates the three contextual factors that affect register,selects some typical cases,and analyzes this task of English-Chinese translation to achieve equivalence in register from three perspectives—field equivalence,tenor equivalence,and language equivalence.The translator found that register theory has applicability for guiding the translation of application text such as supplier manuals.When translating,the translator must fit the original language field and use the correct word meaning;flexibly convert passive sentences to correctly grasp the tenor between both parties;correctly handle the cohesive relationship,stylistic coherence to make mode of discourse consistent.By means of detailed analysis,this report aims to bring some inspiration for the translation of supplier manuals and offer referential values for further discussions.
