Since systemic functional linguistics was founded by M.A.K.Halliday,because of its practicability,it has attracted lots of scholars’ attentions and been widely applied in many areas, such as foreign language teaching, modern stylistics, pragmatics and translation research. It has promoted the development of each area. The register theory--one of the most important theories in the systemic functional linguistics is applied to translation by more and more scholars.so far,the application of register theory to non-literature translation, which refers to science and technology, advertisement, news, law and so on,is less than literature translation. Therefore, this paper discusses with examples how to translate the foreign trade correspondence from the perspective of the register theory, and analyzes the register theory’s instructive function for foreign trade correspondence translation. The whole thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter one is the introduction. It gives a brief introduction to the significance of foreign trade correspondence translation and the current research situation. The research purpose and method are also mentioned.Chapter two is the theoretical framework of this paper. At first the history and concept of register theory are briefly introduced. Then it elaborates its three variables---field,tenor and mode, the relationship between register and metafunctions of language, the application of register theory.Chapter three analyzes the register characteristics of English foreign trade correspondence, and then sums up its lexical, syntactic and textual features.Chapter four is the main body of this thesis.Guided by register theory, this chapter explains how to achieve “register equivalence” in the translation of English foreign correspondence. The field equivalence is mainly achieved by precise and concise wording;the tenor equivalence is achieved by the appropriate employment of formal and polite Chinese words;and the mode equivalence is achieved through cohesion in text.Chapter five is conclusion. The thesis points out the standards of translation—register equivalence. And it also puts forward the view that the translation of foreign trade correspondence should not only achieve the meaning equivalence, but also transfer the original style and communicative functions.
