A Project Report On E-C Translation Of Energy Product Manual From The Perspective Of Register Theory

With the advancement of the “the Belt and Road Initiative”,China is cooperating fully with other countries increasingly.More and more energy products have entered the Chinese market,which can not only help ease the shortage of resources,but also bring a research model for the development of energy industries.As one of the enclosures,the product manual is an important way for people to know the product’s performance and usage.Therefore,the accuracy of its translation is particularly significant in cross-border cooperation.This report is a summary of the Chinese-English translation practice of energy product manual.Using examples from REC Two Peak Series Product Manual,the author analyses its register characteristics from the three variables of register theory,and discusses the translation strategies to achieve register equivalence.This report is mainly divided into five chapters.The first chapter is a brief introduction to the background,content and significance of this translation project.The second chapter is an overview of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,course of translation and post-translation modification.The third chapter is the theoretical framework of this report,mainly expounding the definition of register theory,the three variables of register theory and the application of register theory in translation.The fourth chapter is the key part of this report,which analyses the register characteristics of manual translation from the perspectives of field,tenor and mode and provides us some strategies for achieving register equivalence.The fifth chapter is a conclusion of this translation project.The author finds that the register theory can be applied in the translation of energy product manual.In order to achieve equivalence of field,the translator should select the appropriate meaning to follow the field of source text;to achieve equivalence of tenor,the translator should keep the imperative mood and translate passive sentences flexibly to reflect the relationship between communicating parties;to achieve equivalence of mode,the translator should deal with lexical cohesion correctly to reflect stylistic formality.Finally,the author hopes that this analysis can be of some value in the future research of the translation of energy product manual.
