With the deepening development of global free trade, economic competition among nations is more and more intense.Countries have set up trade barriers to protect their own industries and markets. In this situation,China keeps deepening cooperation with its trade partners with "One Belt And One Road" initiative. In order to help professionals and institutions in the economic and trade fields understand the trade barriers existing in our important trading partners and deal with such trade barriers, the author selected the EU and Australia parts of 2014 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers(hereinafter referred to as the Report)issued by the US Trade Representative Office to be the translation material. The Report has 15,000 words in total and classifies foreign trade barriers into nine different categories, including trade agreements, government procurement, intellectual property rights protection, service barriers, investment barriers, electronic commerce and other barriers.Since the Report involves expertise knowledge in fields of economy, medicine, law, telecom and international trade, its language style is normative and rigorous.Besides, there are a lot of long and complicate sentences, proper names of organizations and documents. In order to express the meaning and style of the source text exactly, the author decided to select the Register Theory and its three elements "field","tenor" and "mode" proposed by M.A.Halliday,an English linguist,as a guidance and adopted the proper translation methods to deal with specific problems encountered in the process of translation. This practice report explains the translation task, introduces the content and structure of the source text, and analyzes the features of the source text first. Then the whole translation process including pre-translation preparation and post translation work is described. After that, the source text is analyzed, and the translation strategy is determined based on the register theory of Hallidy(M.A.Halliday).In the part of case analysis, the author adopted proper translation methods such as adding annotation, word omission and addition, structural adjustment, phrase collocation and so on to process translation problems at lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. The practice report shows that the source text is a report on national barriers assessment, whose contents involve many fields. The translator is required to make plenty of preparation before translation work and to accumulate rich interdisciplinary knowledge. In addition, the translation theory should be applied flexibly to the translation practice,so that the translation can accurately and effectively convey the source text information to the target readers.
