Previous studies on coping strategies for long and complex sentences mainly focused on E-C consecutive interpreting.However,problems are more likely to appear in simultaneous interpreting due to limited processing time.This thesis studies differences on the use of coping strategies for long and complex sentences in C-E simultaneous interpreting between a professional interpreter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a student interpreter from China Foreign Affairs University.Long and complex Chinese sentences analyzed in this thesis are from five Chinese keynote speeches delivered at the opening of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference from 2014 to 2018.This thesis classifies all the long and complex Chinese sentences in the materials into five types in terms of structure complexity and three types in terms of semantic complexity,and then compares the performance and use of coping strategies of the professional and the student interpreter based on the classification.This thesis also summarizes appropriate coping strategies for specific types of long and complex Chinese sentences respectively through systematic and detailed case analysis.The Effort Model is adopted to analyze possible causes of problems in the interpretation of long and complex Chinese sentences in simultaneous interpreting.It is found that problems of the student interpreter are mainly related to sense consistency with original message and target language use.Both interpreters used coping strategies to deal with long and complex sentences in C-E simultaneous interpreting,but the professional interpreter is more resourceful and effective in selecting appropriate coping strategies to improve interpreting output.In addition,coping strategies seem complementary to each other,and appropriate mix of coping strategies helps improve interpreting quality of long and complex Chinese sentences.Restructuring and explaining are appropriate coping strategies for sentences of structure complexity and sentences of semantic complexity respectively.The research findings can be helpful for interpreting training and practice. |
