With the increase of market competition and work demands, the work-family boundary of employees has become more blurred and the conflict between work and family domains has become more serious. In order to help employees better balance their work and family experiences, family supportive supervisor behaviors gradually step in the field of vision of researchers.Prior research shows that family supportive supervisor behaviors not only reduce work-family conflicts, but also improve job attitudes and work behaviors.Work states represented by work engagement and work fatigue have important impacts on employees’ work outcomes and occupational health, but the relationship between family supportive supervisor behaviors and employees’ work states and its mechanism have received less attention and exploration from researchers. Therefore, this study selected two important work states, work engagement and work fatigue, and combined the spillover-crossover model and conservation of resources theory to explore the effects of family supportive supervisor behaviors on employees’ sleep quality in family domain and work states in work domain, and examine the mediating effect of sleep quality and the moderating effect of recovery self-efficacy.187 full-time employees without sleep problems were recruited by snowballing technique.Questionnaires were used to collect basic information of the participants, and an experience sampling method was used to collect the data for five workdays,with814 provided complete data from 170 participants. Our final completion rate is 87.06%.We conducted null models test, reliability and validity analysis, descriptive statistics and correlation analysis on study variables, and used multilevel regression analysis to test the hypothesis. This study found that family supportive supervisor behaviors were associated with higher work engagement and lower work fatigue.Family supportive supervisor behaviors were positively related to sleep quality, and sleep quality was positively related to work engagement and negatively related to work fatigue. Moreover, sleep quality mediated the effects of family supportive supervisor behaviors on work engagement and work fatigue. However, the moderating effect of recovery self-efficacy on the impacts of sleep quality on work states was not supported. This study found the indirect effects of family supportive supervisor behaviors on work engagement and work fatigue via sleep quality. This study enriched the exploration of the mechanism of family supportive supervisor behaviors on employees’ sleep quality with the help of conservation of resources theory, and provided empirical support for the spillover-crossover model between leader and employees.this study also responded to the trend of study on daily work engagement and daily work fatigue. Moreover, the findings also suggest that organization managers should pay more attention to family supportive leadership behavior and employee sleep quality. |
