As an important branch of popular literature,suspense novels have been sought after by readers all over the world.With the increasing reading demand of Chinese readers,the significance of suspense novels translation is becoming more and more prominent.This report selects The Silent Patient,one of the most eye-catching psychological thrillers in 2019,as the translation materials for practice.The Silent Patient is the work of Alex Michaelides,an English Cypriot writer.When it was published in February 2019,it became a best-seller in the UK,the US and Australia,winning Goodreads award for Best Thriller in the same year.With strict logic and exquisite composition,the suspense follows one another in this book.The first part,where the author chooses to translate,narrated the complex character relations,explained the case background and the result of sentence,foreshadowed the uncovered hidden truth,and played an important role in arousing readers’ interest in the whole novel.In order to achieve the communicative purpose of translation,the author chooses Skopos theory of German functional school in translation field as the theoretical guidance,and follows its skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule in this practice.Firstly,the author applies the techniques of conversion,amplification,transliteration to analyze specific cases at lexical level.Secondly,the techniques of adjustment to passive and active voice and reversed translation at syntactic level are studied.And finally,at the textual level,it explains the use of restructuring and coherence and cohesion.While retaining the fiction and popularizing the knowledge of humanities,geography,justice and psychology,it pursues the purpose of attracting readers and enhancing its acceptability,thus completing a spellbinding translation of this suspense novel.In conclusion,the author believes that translating literature under the guidance of Skopos theory is feasible and this theory has instructive significance for the translation of suspense novels,hoping to provide references for future translation of suspense novels.
