As a new technology which came out with the development of communications technologies, the Internet of Things(IoT)is expected to realize the vision of the Internet of Everything(IoE)with the help of the latest generation of 5G network.Naturally,5G and IoT can evolve into two of the hottest technologies and attract keen attention across the globe today.Nowadays, scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges between countries in the world are becoming more and more frequent, which is largely attributable to sci-tech texts. The report is an E-C translation report of white paper 5G–The Future of IoT issued by 5G Americas in July 2019;and the white paper is a typical sci-tech text.As requested by the commissioner, the translator mainly translated the first two chapters and then conducted related case analysis of them.Written in this way,the report aims to provide some inspiration for translators who study the translation of texts on communication industry, and to further promote China’s communication technologies.Based on three rules of Skopos Theory, the report discusses all kinds of translation difficulties encountered in translation at three levels.Major findings are summarized as follows: As for lexical level, much effort is devoted to these difficulties: inadequate information, redundant information, and preferred parts of speech. To address them, translation techniques are adopted respectively, including addition, omission and conversion. At syntactic level, there are lots of passive sentences, long and complicated sentences, and short sentences in the source text.Faced with this, the translator turn to voice change, division and combination for help;Textual level shows that English and Chinese are rooted in different cultural backgrounds, that Chinese likes repetition and that sci-tech texts emphasize logical thinking. In view of this, the translator resorts to annotation, reiteration and logic enhancing. It should be added that all the translation difficulties mentioned above are obtained according to expression differences and cultural differences between English and Chinese. Both of them have no discrimination in good and bad and exist in their own unique way.
