Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, great progress has been made in the development of medical science, and the newest medical technological products have been shared and enjoyed to a great extent by people throughout the world. The exchanges between China and other countries in the field of medicine are getting increasingly deeper and frequent.Translation of English medical literature into Chinese is one of the important means of introducing advanced medical information. However, translating medical English texts is far from easy because such texts bear strongly the characteristics of other sci-tech texts with the newest information, numerous professional technical terms, complicated sentences, and rigorous logic. This thesis is a report on the translation practice in which the author of the thesis selected and translated the first three chapters of a medical book The Electrocon vulsive Therapy Workbook Clinical Application under guidance of Skopos theory.Skopos theory views translation as a purposeful action, stressing the socicultural and functional concepts of translation and claiming that contextual factors such as the cultural environment of the target language readers and the function the text is to perform in that environment cannot be ignored in the translation process.Skopos theorists believe that the needs of target language readers determine the translation process, and that the purpose of translation determines the translation strategy. The tran slator in this practice,or rather, the author of this report carefully analyzed the source text, tried to understand the knowledge of electroconvulsive therapy, and strived to convey accurately the information of the latest medical technology to Chinese medical workers and other readers. In the entire translation process, the translator encountered difficulties at levels of vocabulary, syntax, and discourse and adopted under the guidance of Skopos theory such translation methods as literal translation, literal translation plus annotations, division, amplification, repetition, etc.,solving the problems and completing translation tasks satisfactorily. This translation practice is of certain academic and social values.Translating the text on the clinical application of electroconvulsive therapy is helpful in spreading and popularizing the latest medical technology and improving people’s health condition. This practice has proved the applicability of Skopos theory to the translation and study of translation of medical texts. The successful completion of the practice will hopefully inspire further study and translation of the whole text and help widen the application of the medical therapy in China.
