In recent years,as both domestic and international interpreting markets have been increasingly specialized, the demand for “professional” interpreters has surged. For those who are interested in gas field interpreting, opportunities and challenges are present.Gas field interpreting requires high accuracy and immediacy as it is performed in a specific domain with distinctiveness for the purpose of delivering message. Therefore, the Interpretive Theory proposed by Danica Seleskovitch is of significance as the guidance of the gas field interpreting.Taking her 15-month interpreting practice in CDB Natural Gas Project as the researching base, the author analyzes the difficulties arising from the gas field interpreting practice and proposes relevant coping tactics under the guidance of Danica Seleskovitch’s Interpretive Theory. This report describes the work related to the Turnaround activities of the New Gas Plant in CDB Natural Gas Project, the requirements for interpreting, the preparation prior to interpreting and the basic idea of the Interpretive Theory. In combination of the Interpretive Theory and case study, the author focuses on the difficulties encountered in practice and proposes the relevant coping tactics. In this report, comprehension difficulties caused by various accents and jargon and shortterm memory deficiency caused by high information density and harsh working condition are covered.Based on the Interpretive Theory, the interpreter can deal with the difficulty of accents through inference and omission on site, enhance comprehension and refine expression through contextualization, explanation and utilization of technical drawings and physical objects, and better extract information by adopting memory skills and improving note-taking.In addition, the author summarizes qualities that a field interpreter should possess through feedback from clients and self-assessment.In gas field interpreting, besides excellent bilingual skills, the application of theories and interpreting skills and the physical and mental preparations are needed to help interpreters quickly adapt to the working condition and timely communicate messages to clients. In some cases, the traditional standard of “fidelity” is replaced by the “standards of clients”,which may require the interpreter to summarize the main idea of the source text as the output.Thisphenomenon is particularly obvious in gas field interpreting.By means of this interpreting practice report, the author learns to apply theoretical knowledge of interpreting to handle difficulties in real interpreting tasks and realizes the importance of “professional” interpreting which requires interpreters to consistently absorb professional knowledge in the relevant field to be competent to perform interpreting tasks.Meanwhile,it is hoped that the report can serve as the reference for the future study of the gas field interpreting.
