A Report On Mock Interpreting Of Obama's 2014 And 2015 State Of The Union Addresses

This thesis is a report of consecutive interpreting practice. Public address is made by a speaker in the face of a large number of audiences. Political address is one type of public addresses which is one of the most significant means to spread views,stabilize public moral and win support.The author selects President Barack Obama's State of the Union Addresses as interpreting materials, and conducts comprehensive descriptions and analysis after the interpretation. The State of the Union Address is a political address, which is equivalent to the Report on the Work of the Central People's Government of China. In State of the Union Address, the President shall report to the congress about the status of the country, the problems facing the country, and put forward the corresponding annual legislative agenda.The thesis mainly consists of six chapters: Chapter One is Introduction, which introduces the background, theme and contents of this thesis; Chapter Two is Task Analysis, including contents and features of the address and principles of political address interpretation; Chapter Three is Process Description, mainly summarizing the preparation, interpreting and review; Chapter Four is Case Study. It is the main part of the report. The author introduces the Interpretive Theory and five main skills used under the guidance of this theory; In Chapter Five, misinterpretations, difficulties and enlightenment in the interpretation of political address are concluded. In the last part,the author sums up the thesis and makes a conclusion of the enlightenment.The contents of the State of the Union Address have a wide coverage, ranging from politics to economy, society and culture. This makes the interpretation task more demanding, but also offers a great opportunity for the interpreter to make progress in political address interpretation.
