A Report On The Interpreting Tasks Of Emergency Response Team Of Chuandongbei Gas Project

Nowadays,the process of globalization is accelerating and its degree is deepening.In keeping with the trend of the times,China is actively pursuing more comprehensive and in-depth reform and opening up.Under the guidance of China’s “going out” and “bringing in” strategies,a large number of multinational projects have emerged,which has sped up the growth of China’s economy and stimulated the development of the language service industry.Featured with the widest range of applications,English language possesses the largest number of service personnel of the whole language service industry.Based on the author’s interpreting practice in the Sino-foreign joint venture Chuandongbei Gas Project(CDB Gas Project),in which the author took charge of the interpreting tasks of Emergency Response Team(ERT),this report focuses on the analysis of the major difficulties and solutions involved in the tasks in accordance with the interpretive theory,hoping to provide some reference and inspiration for interpreters of the relevant industries.The idea of “interpreting process” and “de-verbalization” proposed by the interpretive theory is significant to guide the author’s practice.Seleskovitch and Lederer put forward that the interpreting process includes three stages,comprehension of source language,de-verbalization,and re-expression in target language.Based on a thorough understanding of the source text,an interpreter gets rid of the language form and grasps the meaning of the text,and finally outputs the meaning in the target language.During interpreting,the author was confronted with four major obstacles,ranging from unfamiliar accents to information loss to culture-loaded words and to redundancy.Under the guidance of the interpretive theory,the author concluded four coping strategies,namely inquiry,contextualization,explanation,and summarization.Inquiry is to confirm or ask for more information from the speaker.Contextualization aims at taking advantage of background information,subject matter,and context to help to understand the source text.Explanation intends to explain or describe some cultureloaded words to help the audience acquire the information.Summarization focuses on summarizing the wordy contents and making the meaning plain and logic to the audience.The four above-mentioned interpreting strategies turned out effective in the author’s interpreting process to tackle the major obstacles,which was confirmed by the clients in their positive feedback.Accordingly,the author’s self-reflection on the interpreting project highlights that along with sufficient preparations in all aspects involved,employing appropriate interpreting strategies flexibly is crucial for the interpreters to improve the quality of interpretation.
