This report is based on the E-C translation of the book,So,you want to remain poor,in which Nida’s functional equivalence theory is chosen to be the guiding theory. The translator hopes that by presenting a faithful and fluent translation, some basic knowledge about technical translation of subjects on finance and money management could be provided to Chinese readers. The book is about finance and economics, containing not only a large number of professional expressions, such as economic terms, but also lots of culture-loaded words, such as colloquial sayings. The receptors of the book include both the professionals and the readers who are interested in this field but lacking professional background. With that in mind, the translator chose Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory to make the translation both precise, and suited to the taste of general public, and best serve the need of Chinese readers. The problems that were solved in translation process include the translation of proper nouns,prepositions,culture-loaded words, passive sentences and long and complex sentences with multiple levels of sentence elements. The report gives an introduction to functional equivalence theory, covering some concepts like formal equivalence, dynamic equivalence, and functional equivalence.Problems in two major segments, word and sentence, which are hard to solve in this translation practice, and strategies adopted, are explained, combining with specific examples. The necessity and importance of implementing the theory to this project are also explained. Both deficiencies and experience are summarized for future reference.
