With the continuous development of science and technology, the public’s demand for scientific knowledge is also increasing. In the era of frequent global communication and rapid dissemination of information, reading popular science articles is one of the effective ways for the public to improve their scientific and cultural literacy,so the study of English-Chinese translation of popular science texts has certain practical significance.Based on functional equivalence theory, this translation practice report selects the fourth and fifth chapters of the popular science book Evolve Your Brain:The Science of Changing Your Mind as the translation object and explores the problems and their corresponding solutions in the process of popular science text translation. The report consists of five parts:the introduction to the translation task, the description of the translation procedure, the overview of the translation theory, the case study and the conclusion, exploring how to choose appropriate translation strategies and methods to guide the English-Chinese translation practice under the guidance of functional equivalence theory at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels.By analyzing specific cases, the translator find that functional equivalence theory can effectively guide the translation of English popular science texts into Chinese. At the lexical level, translators should fully consider the differences between English and Chinese expressions and use methods such as literal translation, amplification, and conversion of parts of speech in combination with the context for translation. At the syntactic level, passive sentences and long and complicated sentences should be converted into active sentences and short sentences which conform to the Chinese expression habits respectively. At the textual level, the translator should retain or adjust the cohesive devices of the source text appropriately,or use amplification to manifest the logical relations of the source text,so as to achieve the logicality and coherence of the translation. The translation practice shows that the functional equivalence theory plays a positive guiding role in improving the translation quality of popular science texts, and the translator hopes that this report can provide reference for the translation of similar popular science texts in the future.
