Objective:This study aimed to explore the efficacy of the nursing intervention based on self-efficacy theory on postoperative self-efficacy,self-care ability, symptoms and living activities function of patients with esophageal cancer.Method:This study was a quasi-experimental study, using a non-synchronous control design.A total of 76 patients of thoracic esophageal cancer surgery from a tertiary hospital in Linyi City of Shandong Province were selected as subjects by convenient sampling method.38 patients with esophageal cancer surgery from October 2019 to March 2020 were included in the control group,38 patients with esophageal cancer surgery from April 2020 to September 2020 were included in the intervention group.Patients in the control group received the conventional nursing care, and patients in the intervention group received the comprehensive intervention nursing care based on the self-efficacy theory besides the conventional nursing. The direct experience of patients was increased through distributing the health education manuals and the direct postoperative sensation; The patients’ alternative experience was enhanced by example demonstration and sharing with patients’ friends;verbal persuasion was performed with patients through face-to-face conversation or health lectures;family members were invited to participate in nursing to improve the physical and mental support of the patients;and all of the ways can evaluate the effect of intervention. Before and after the intervention, the demographics,self-care ability,self-management efficacy and the postoperative symptoms of patients and the impact of the symptoms on the function of living activities in the two groups were assessed with the general demographic information questionnaire,self-care ability measurement scale of Chinese version, the cancer self-management efficacy scale of Chinese version and the Anderson Symptom Scale of Chinese version.SPSS22.0 software was used for statistical analysis including data description,t test and chi-square test.P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.Results:1.Comparison between the two groups before interventionThere was no statistical significance in the general information of 2 groups(P>0.05).Before intervention, the total scores of self-management efficacy in control group and intervention group were(95.55±18.67)and(94.26±17.27),respectively.The total scores of self-care ability in the control group and the intervention group were(81.11±16.64)and(82.05±14.67),respectively,and the differences were not statistically significant. The total scores of symptoms in the control group and the intervention group were(90.24±6.18)and(89.66±6.12),respectively.The scores of symptoms interfering with living activity function in control group and intervention group were(40.29±4.74)and(40.29±3.98),respectively,and there was no statistical significance(P>0.05).2.Comparison between the two groups after interventionAfter intervention, the total scores of self-management efficacy in control group and intervention group were(106.92±19.29)and(118.47±18.52),respectively.The total scores of self-care ability in the control group and the intervention group were(95.82±23.74)and(111.61±17.79),respectively,with statistical significance(P<0.05).The total scores of symptoms in the control group and the intervention group were(87.57±6.59)and(68.00±5.75),respectively.The total scores of symptoms interfering with living activity function in the control group and the intervention group were(39.32±4.08)and(31.61±4.48),respectively,with statistical significance(P<0.05).3.Comparison within control groupAfter intervention the scores and dimensions of self-efficacy and self-nursing ability in the control group were improved, which were satistically higher(P<0.05).After intervention the scores of symptoms and the function of life activities of patients in the control group were lower, which were no satistically difference(P >0.05).4.Comparison within intervention groupCompared with before intervention,self-management efficacy,self-nursing ability score, scores of various dimensions and symptoms of patients in the intervention group were significantly improved, with statistical significance(P<0.05).After intervention, the scores of symptoms interfering with life activity function were all lower than before intervention, and there were statistically significant differences in the effects on mood, general activity, walking, fun of life and relationships with others(P<0.05),and there was no statistical significance in the impact on work(P >0.05).Conclusions:1.The nursing intervention based on self-efficacy theory can enhance the self-efficacy of postoperative patients with esophageal cancer and significantly improve their self-nursing ability2.The nursing intervention based on self-efficacy theory can reduce the severity of symptoms and effectively improve the function of life activities of patients with esophageal cancer after surgery.
