| Canine babesios is a common clinical parasitic disease in canine, resulting in rupture of red blood cells and a series of clinical symptoms such as anemia, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, which endangers sick dog’s life and poses huge treat to the health of canine. In recent years, the clinical incidence of canine babesiosis caused by Babesia gibsoni is becoming more common due to the increase in the number of dogs being bred. The main treatment for it is deworming therapy combined with transfusion therapy and complication treatment.Though it has a good therapeutic effect, the recurrence rate is high.In the present study, medical records in terms of individual conditions and clinical diagnosis characteristics for sick dogs infected babesiosis from an animal hospital in Xi’an Shaanxi Province were analysed.comprehensively along with treatment plan and treatment effect. The diagnosis and treatment process of a typical case was reported and analyzed. The aim of this study was to summarize the characteristics, clinical diagnosis and treatment of canine babesiosis caused by B.gibsoni, and to provide reliable reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The results are as follows:1.The analysis on diagnosis of 61 cases of B.gibsoni showed different breeds and all ages of dogs were at risk of infection, dogs aged between 1 and 3 years were prone to be infected(41.0%).Canine babesiosis was prevalent throughout the year. The incidence among four seasons to the total was 14.7% in spring,27.9% in summer,54% in autumn and 3.3% in winter. The common clinical symptoms were low spirits(73.8%),anorexia(82.0%),pale mucosa(91.8%),mucosa jaundice(72.1%),hemoglobinuria(27.9%)and fever(23.0%),concurrent with liver and kidney failure and canine pancreatitis. Most infected dogs displayed clinically declined HCT(94.7%),HGB(98.2%),RBC(96.5%)and PLT(87.7%),while some of them had rising liver and kidney indexes and abnormal biochemical and blood gas tests results.2.The treatment of 41 cases of B.gibsoni showed that although the cure rate was high(95.1%),the recurrence rate was not low(47.5%).68.3% of the dogs were treated by transfusion therapy, without side effects. Both atorvaquone and diminazene aceturate were excellent in recovery rate, however, the former was relatively superior in respect of recurrence rate which was comparatively lower(33.3%).3.Blood smear examination,CBC,CRP,biochemical examination, ultrasound examination, and other clinical diagnosis examination were employed for a suspected infected dog,and the final diagnose confirmed it was infected B.gibsoni concurrent with liver failure. Then, the clinical symptoms of infected dog disappeared without recurrence after transfusion, deworming and other treatment. This study showed that anorexia and pale mucos are dominant clinical symptoms of canine babesiosis which is common in autumn.Dogs aged 1 to 3 years are more likely to be infected.Atorvaquone has a good therapeutic effect, but there is still a risk of recurrence. It is suggested that animal owners should pay more attention to the prevention of this disease in the routine feeding. |
