| Yantai was one of the first ports of commerce to be opened in China,and the Chaoyang Street Historic Quarter was the birthplace of Yantai’s ethnic industry and commerce.As the birthplace of Yantai,the Chaoyang Street – Qishan Suocheng Historic Quarter has suffered varying degrees of damage to many houses and blocks due to poor conservation.During this period,the Chaoyang Street – Qishan Suocheng Historic Quarter has undergone several conservation plans,but the results have been unsatisfactory due to the importance attached by the government and the funding of the renovation.It is only with the newly launched conservation and renovation programme that the conservation and renovation of the Chaoyang Street – Qishan Suocheng Historic Quarter has really been put into practice.This paper attempts to quantify and compare the spatial vitality of the historic district of Chaoyang Street-Qishan Suocheng before and after its renovation by means of the theory and method of spatial syntax,in an attempt to identify problems and provide reference for the optimisation and enhancement of the vitality of the historic district.By selecting representative periods of Yantai’s urban development process,analyzing the development of the city with historical materials,constructing an axial map of each period,analyzing the characteristics of urban morphological evolution with the help of the spatial syntax axial method,and elaborating the development positioning of the Chaoyang Street-Qishan Suocheng historic district in different periods of the city.At the same time,the road system and the public space in the district are compared and analysed in terms of their spatial vitality before and after the transformation of the historic district through axial analysis,visual field analysis and agent analysis.The results show that the core structure of the road system in the historic district has been strengthened after the renovation,however,the non-core roads have low connection values,high depth values and low accessibility for visitors;the core roads after the renovation have high integration and high connectivity,while the connectivity values of the streets and end lanes have a low degree of fitting with the integration values,which leads to a spatial break in the district and cuts off the route for visitors;in the comprehensibility analysis,visitors’ first impression of the historic district In the comprehensibility analysis,visitors’ first impression of the historic district is vague,and it is difficult to infer the spatial system of the whole district from the visible local space,therefore,it is easy for visitors to get lost in the historic district;the renovation scheme has alleviated the degree of obscuration of part of the public space,but the identifiability of most of the public space has not been significantly improved.Finally,in response to the results of the above analysis,suggestions are made for the enhancement of the vitality of the Chaoyang Street – Qishan Suocheng Historic Quarter in terms of the overall space,the street space and the public space,which are to improve the functional complex of the quarter,strengthen the connection between the street space and the public space,and enhance the landscape effect through alternating changes in the degree of integration of sight lines,in the hope of improving the spatial vitality of the historic quarter,extending the visiting time of tourists,and allowing them to more quickly This is expected to improve the spatial vitality of the historic district,extend the visiting time of visitors and allow them to get to know and experience the district faster. |
