For a long time,the number of sports venues has been much lower in the northeast than that in the east,expecially in the severe cold region.Small and medium-sized stadiums are suitable for a wide range of construction.As China pays more attention to the sports,the number of small and medium-sized stadium buildings will increase significantly in the severe cold region.Meanwhile,due to large space volume of stadiums,the type of building features of high energy consumption and high carbon emissions.In the context of energy conservation and carbon emission reduction,the timber structure based stadiums would be one of the important trends of the development of stadiums in the future.This paper analyzed the environmental,social and economic benefits of the timber stadium in comparison with the conventional reinforced concrete(RC)stadium.This paper identified the advantages and disadvantages of the comprehensive benefits of the timber stadium as well.The optimized design strategy of the type of building are discussed as follow.This paper firstly reviews the existing researches and stadiums following summarisation of the construction techniques of timber stadiums.This paper analyzed benefits of the stadiums forwarded the theoretical framework of evaluation of timber structure of small and medium-sized stadiums.The evaluation include environmental aspect,the economic aspect and the social benefits.The specific evaluation indexes of environmental benefits consider energy consumptions,indoor air temperatures and carbon emissions.The social benefits include nine items such as architectural innovation benefits and social demonstration benefits.The specific evaluation index of economic benefit is the economic cost of each stage of the whole life cycle of stadiums.The simulation experiments were carried out based on the IES-VE simulation platform for environmental benefits.The energy consumption and the indoor air temperatures of timber stadium and RC stadium were simulated and compared in the same experimental conditions.Carbon emissions of stadiums with both structures were calculated based on the energy consumption.And the environmental benefits of timber buildings were evaluated based on the three results.Then,the nine evaluation indexes of social benefits were classified according to the four design stages: design phase,construction phase,operational phase and demolition phase.The social benefits were evaluated after qualitative analysis respectively.After that,the economic costs of construction stage,operational stage and the demolition stage was studied quantitatively,and the economic benefits of the timber stadium are evaluated accordingly.In addition,since the indicators of social and economic benefits are involved in all stages of the entire life cycle of buildings,the two benefits are combined into the fourth chapter,and are specifically analyzed of the four stages of designs,constructions,operational stage and the demolition stage.The conclusions can be drawn: in terms of environmental benefits,the timber stadium has obvious advantages in energy consumption and carbon emissions,while the disadvantage is that it is prone to overheating in summer.In terms of social benefits,the timber stadium has obvious advantages in many aspects such as architectural innovative benefits and architectural industrial benefits.Whereas,the timber stadiums have longer demolition period and higher labor intensity during the demolition stage.In terms of economic benefits,the timber stadium has advantages in the recycling stage,but it has disadvantages in the construction stage and operational stage.Finally,aiming at the disadvantages of the environment,social and economic benefits of the timber stadium,the optimization design strategies are proposed.These optimization design strategies of timber stadiums will provide a certain theoretical basis for the promotion of timber stadium buildings in severe cold region of China.
