With the development of China's economy and people's living standards, people's needs for sports buildings are increasing. Since the Sports Law of The People's Republic of China, the National Fitness Program and the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing, sports buildings increased all around our country. Increased life quality demands for comfortable and healthy gymnasium. Due to their large number and strict environment requirements, gymnasiums cause severe consumption.General Administration of Sport advocates the green development of sports in the 13th Five Year Plan, which emphasizes the potential of sports in building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. To reduce resource consumption and environment burden, optimize indoor environment, the design of gymnasiums should take climate as a dominate factor, emphasizes the harmony with environment and sustainable development. This paper researches into small and medium-sized gymnasiums in cold areas. To reduce consumption, green design strategy is given during different procedures of architecture design. This paper consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction which lays foundation for the whole paper. Chapter 2 introduces the climate features in cold areas and its relation with the green design of architectures. Chapter 3 describes the development and consumption status of the small and medium-sized gymnasiums in cold areas. It analyzes their main problems through study and information query. Chapter 4, the core part of this paper, analyzes the green design strategy from various aspects such as site design, architectural appearance, ventilation, light, green energy, etc. Chapter 5 is case study which carries out quantitative analysis by energy-saving software and verify the green design strategy. The last chapter is an conclusion and outlook. This paper aims to provide theoretical and practical guide for the green design of small and medium-sized gymnasiums in cold areas, and change the current design idea that prefers form to energy-saving.
