In the context of tourism development and construction in ancient towns, how to coordinate the relationship between historical protection and tourism development, avoid "every ancient town is similar" and meet the increasing demand of tourists, has become an urgent problem to be solved.Public space is an important part of the ancient town, and it is also the most intensive place to carry tourists, which has important protection value and tourism value.During the tour, the behavior and experience of tourists can directly reflect the quality of the space. Therefore, the optimization of the public space of the ancient town based on the behavior needs of tourists can avoid blind development and construction,so as to propose reasonable optimization strategies to realize the "historical protection" of the ancient town.Win-win with "tourism development".This article selects Chengdu’s historical and cultural town,Pingle Ancient Town, which has early tourism development, large number of tourists, rich and representative types of public spaces, and is located in Qionglai City under the jurisdiction of Chengdu as the research object. In order to alleviate the contradiction between tourists’ behavioral needs and the development of public space in ancient towns under the background of tourism, this paper investigates the public spaces of ancient towns through literature research, field research, drawing heat maps, grid diagram analysis and other methods, sorting out tourists’ behavior needs and behavior characteristics, and exploring The relationship between public space and tourist behavior, summarizes the existing problems of the public space of the ancient town, and finally proposes an optimized renovation strategy to achieve the purpose of promoting the sustainable development of the ancient town. The main research content and conclusions of this article are as follows:First, investigate and study the public space of Pingle Ancient Town. From a macro perspective, the ancient town’s public space structure is embodied as three horizontal, one axis, one river and three waters, which are divided into core public spaces, important public spaces and general public spaces according to their hierarchical characteristics. From a micro perspective, the public space of the ancient town consists of four types of spaces: street space, square space, small node space, and riverside space. The spatial form of each type of public space includes plane form, spatial scale, and spatial interface. The spatial elements include commercial elements and facilities.Elements, natural elements.Secondly, through questionnaire surveys and field observations, the behavior needs and behavior characteristics of tourists in ancient towns are sorted out.Summarizing the behavioral needs of tourists include the overall demand for the structure of public space, the demand for principal and subordinate, and the demand for the comfort of various types of public space, and the demand for cultural experience. The behaviors of tourists are divided into five categories: cultural and entertainment behaviors, sightseeing behaviors, leisure behaviors, commercial behaviors and sports behaviors,as well as dynamic behaviors and staying behaviors.Third,it analyzes the relationship between the public space of Pingle Ancient Town and the behavior of tourists, and summarizes the problems faced by the current public space. The relationship between public space and tourist behavior is as follows:(1)The overall structure of the public space at the macro level affects the tourist route.Tourist route includes three types: covering type,street-based all-use type, and riverside space surrounding use type;the impact of public space hierarchical characteristics The dynamic flow of tourists and the distribution law of staying behavior.(2)At the micro level, the spatial forms and spatial elements of various types of public spaces in ancient towns induce tourists’ behaviors.Tourists’ behaviors prefer high-openness,pleasant-scale linear, square and other spatial forms,as well as active spatial elements such as recreational facilities, water bodies, greenery, commerce etc.It has a positive guiding effect on tourists’ behavior.Based on the above analysis, summarize the existing problems of the public space of the ancient town:(1)In terms of the public space structure, the ancient town lacks a reasonable and orderly tour route, and some primary and secondary nodes are unclear.(2)In terms of various types of public spaces, some streets and alleys are too wide or too narrow, lacking recreational facilities;the square space has a high travel rate of tourists and low stay;most of the small node spaces have not been rectified and have poor appearance;part of the riverside space lacks corresponding Recreational facilities are less attractive to tourists. Finally,in view of the problems facing the current situation of the public space in the ancient town, based on the behavior needs of tourists,an optimized update strategy is proposed from the macro and micro levels.According to the principles of protection priority,adaptability,people-oriented and characteristic, the public space structure is sorted out at a macro level, and the tour route and functional zoning are improved;at the micro level, problematic spaces in the street space, square space, small node space, and riverside space are selected for optimization Retrofit.
